In March, colorectal cancer awareness month, a Republican congressional leader equated special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation to medical procedures done to prevent and treat cancer, then said inquiries into Russia’s attacks on the 2016 election shouldn’t have been done.
Just as not having important medical tests can result in death, not protecting elections from foreign influence and a candidate backed by dictators like Putin and backed by white supremacists will kill American values.
The GOP should be outraged that Russians interfered in the 2016 campaign, but they’ve attacked the agencies for proving it. Such an un-American reaction makes one wonder if they’ve been compromised by foreign entities. Could they have financed campaigns with laundered foreign money? The three RNC finance co-chairs, Michael Cohen, Steve Wynn and Elliott Broidy, have resigned, and NRA officials who spent much more money to elect Trump have also left.

Trump’s constant demeaning of courts, media, Democrats, immigrants and minorities coupled with tacit support of the alt-right and praise for dictators and tyrants weakens our democracy. Voters must reject complicity and hypocrisy to restore American unity. Free, fair elections and diversity are the heart of our greatness and must be protected and celebrated.
It’s time for a nonpartisan commission to investigate where all that campaign money comes from, to file suit to overturn the Citizens United decision and Senate passage of the House bill reforming election, campaign finance and ethics laws, but Majority Leader Mitch McConnell refuses to schedule a vote, ignoring his constitutional duties again.
