100 years ago

Aug. 13, 1919: The Meadows Manufacturing Co. of Pontiac will relocate to Bloomington, bringing 300 to 500 jobs. Proceeds from the sale of lots in the Association of Commerce Subdivision will go to help finance the plant’s move here. Meadows makes washing machines.

75 years ago

Aug. 13, 1944: A woman wrote Police Chief Clyde Hibbens and suggested Bloomington ban women from wearing shorts in public. She enclosed a clipping about a Texas town that did just that. She suggested the chief think it over. At last report he was still in contemplation.

50 years ago

Aug. 13, 1969: Pfc. Jeremy Lay of El Paso has been named outstanding advanced trainee at Fort Polk, La. Lay, 20, will ship out to Fort Walters, Texas, where he begins helicopter training next week.

25 years ago

Aug. 13, 1994: Gasoline prices have taken a jump in the past six weeks. Prices average $1.249 per gallon, fully a dime above what they were around July Fourth. Three sources gave different reasons for the increase: high demand, low prices for years and wholesale price hikes.
