100 years ago
Aug. 29, 1917: The Lutheran school on South Madison Street will open Sept. 4 with an expected enrollment of 200. A faculty of four, including the principal, will teach. This is one of 6,200 Lutheran schools nationwide, with a total enrollment around 265,000 students.
75 years ago
Aug. 29, 1942: Bloomington City Council went on record against the Illinois Traction Railroad’s plans to drop any train service from the Twin Cities. The ITR has filed for permission to drop its passenger service because buses are too much competition.
50 years ago
Aug. 29, 1967: Arthur Biederman, 79, walked off from his home southwest of town. A search party was organized. Amateur pilots and a CB radio club were part of the 250 volunteers who scoured the area. An unidentified 16-year-old boy found him safe two hours later.
25 years ago
Aug. 29, 1992: Larry Campbell Jr., 21, was sentenced to 25 years in prison for four armed robberies. Three of them were restaurants. He fired shots in two of the crimes, leaving one man grazed in the leg. Campbell had no previous record and was reported to be from a good home.
