For the second time in four days, the Illinois State baseball team wasted a lead en route to a loss to the hosts at the Austin Peay Invitational in Clarksville, Tenn.
This time, the Governors scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on Sunday to win their second come-from-behind victory against the Redbirds. ISU (0-4) lost 7-6 to Austin Peay (3-2) on Thursday when it scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth.
On Sunday, junior Kitt Kopach (0-1) took the pitching loss for the Redbirds after pitching just two-thirds of an inning and giving up the go-ahead run in relief of Luke Baughman. Jamie Ganz (2-1) earned the victory for the Governors while Michael Parson recorded his first save of the season.
The Redbirds got on the scoreboard first with a run on three hits in the top of the fourth inning. Ryan Anetsberger continued his hot hitting, leading off with a single to left field. Anetsberger stole second as Matt Bolt struck out on an attempted hit-and-run play. Gabe DeMarco's single then moved Anetsberger to third and Kyle O'Brien brought in Anetsberger in with a single to right field for his second RBI of the season.
However, Austin Peay would get that run back in the bottom of the inning when ISU starter Jim Sajewich threw a wild pitch with runners on second and third with two outs. Austin Peay broke the tie in the bottom of the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly.
The Redbirds pushed two runs across the plate in the top of the sixth inning. After leading off with another single, Anetsberger eventually scored from third on a DeMarco single past the second baseman to tie the score. ISU added its third run on O'Brien's second RBI of the day, a sacrifice fly to center field, that scored Kevin Dubler to give ISU the lead.
Anetsberger struck again in the top of seventh inning, as he ripped a double to left-center field off reliever Ben Wilshire that scored Kris Jenkins and Jay Molina to extend the Redbird lead to 5-2. But Austin Peay came back with four runs on three hits in the bottom of the eighth inning to take a 6-5 lead and held on to win.
Anetsberger led the way for the Redbirds, going 4-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI. Lane paced the Governors with three hits, two runs scored and an RBI.
Softball team rained out again
The Illinois State softball team was rained out of its games for the second straight day at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga. Steady rains throughout the day on Saturday saturated the fields at South Commons Stadium, forcing the cancellation of the final day of play.
ISU finished the tournament leading its pool with a 2-0 record. The Redbirds downed UMass, 5-2, and then upset No. 24 Louisville, 3-2, on the only day of play in the tournament.
