NORMAL -- Getting summoned to the manager's office two days before the opening of the season is seldom good news.
And Normal manager Hal Lanier delivered that news Thursday when catcher Brett Chamberlain, pitcher Kolby Moore and outfielder Victor Valdez were released.
The CornBelters are now at their 24-man limit entering Friday's Frontier League season opener at River City.
"It's a rough day for everybody," Lanier said. "I've always said this is one part of the job I don't like, releasing kids. Hopefully we can find them (other) places to play."
The departure of Chamberlain means former Illinois State player Gabe DeMarco has made the Normal roster as the No. 2 catcher behind starter Jeff Dunbar.
"DeMarco deserves a roster spot," Lanier said. "He looked very good defense wise. He's had a very good spring."
The Belters will open the season with 12 pitchers and 12 position players.
"We felt the 12th pitcher was probably going to be more valuable than a 13th position player," said Lanier.
