Drive suffer first loss, miss PBL record

STERLING — The Central Division Champion Central Illinois Drive suffered their first Premier Basketball League loss Saturday night, falling to the Sauk Valley Predators, 88-87.

The Drive (15-1) were one win from tying the PBL winning streak record of 16 set by the 2008-09 Rochester RazorSharks.

The Drive did tie Lawton-Fort Sill for the second longest PBL winning streak at 15 games. Lawton-Fort Sill did that last season.

The see-saw game saw the Predators (8-6) get the lead for good in the final two minutes.

Perry Petty led the Drive with 22 points and had eight rebounds. Anthony Slack added 16 points and 12 rebounds while Nathan Fuqua chipped in 15 points and eight boards.

The Drive shot 42 percent from the field, but were only 8 of 31 (26  percent) from 3-point range. The Drive made 11 of 19 free throws (58 percent).

Sauk Valley, which had lost four earlier games to the Drive, took a 4-0 lead, but the Drive came back with an 8-0 run. The Predators led after one quarter, 24-22. At the half, the home team led, 47-43.

The Drive went on to a 14-2 run to open the third period. Central Illinois ended the quarter with an 8-0 run and led 68-62 entering the fourth quarter.

The Drive built the lead to 76-64, but Sauk Valley scrambled back.
