BLOOMINGTON — Erin Bradley of Normal Community and Brad Kennedy of Ridgeview have been recognized as members of the Illinois High School Association all-state academic team. The 26-member team will be honored at a banquet Monday at the Double Tree Conference Center in Bloomington.
"Selection for the all-state academic team is a tremendous recognition of a student's academic performance, and also of the student's demonstration of character and citizenship," said Marty Hickman, the executive director of the IHSA. "Competition for this recognition is intense and selection certainly recognizes team members as truly outstanding young people."
Nominations for 400 seniors were received. The all-state academic team includes one male and one female senior student from each of the seven IHSA Board of Directors statewide geographic divisions, plus 12 at-large selections. Another 50 students earned honorable mention.
Among those students from the Pantagraph area receiving honorable mention were Tyler Cain and Mackenzie Clemens of Bloomington, Mary Kathryn Duncan of Central Catholic and Andrew Wherley of Eureka.
To be eligible for consideration for selection to the team, a student in an IHSA member school must have a minimum grade point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale after the seventh semester. Nominees must have participated in at least two IHSA-sponsored activities (athletics and/or non-athletics) during the last two school years, and must have demonstrated outstanding citizenship during their high school career.
Bradley has participated in track and field and golf at NCHS. She also is a member of the orchestra, Scholastic Bowl team, Mock Trial team, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Spanish Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta and Social Studies Club.
In her four years on the golf team, she has been team captain for two years, MVP, winner of her team's sportsmanship award, a member of the IHSA tournament's seventh place team, a conference champion, and finished in the top 30 at state.
Bradley is also a National Merit Scholarship Finalist and a member of the National Honor Society, with a 34 on her ACT and a 5.21 grade point on a 5.0 scale.
Kennedy has participated in track and field, football, basketball and baseball at Ridgeview. He is a member of the National Honor Society, C.A.P.T.A.I.N.S., TIPs, Spanish Club, the Academic Team, and participated in instrumental music for four years. He was also president of student government as a freshman.
He was an all-conference honorable mention selection as a linebacker in football. In track, Kennedy was part of the 3,200-meter relay team that took second at sectionals. In WYSE, he made it to the sectional round in both chemistry and math, and to the state finals in computer science.
Kennedy is an Illinois State Scholar, recipient of the Black Lion Award in football, and a member of the Pantagraph's Scholar/Athlete team. He ranks first in his class with a 4.08 GPA, and scored a 32 on his ACT.
