PEORIA — The Peoria Chiefs downed the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 7-3, in Midwest League baseball action Thursday night in front of 2,706 at O’Brien Stadium for their third consecutive victory.
Usuf Carter went three for four, scored once and drove in a run as the Chiefs improved to 21-20 in the second half and 62-48 overall.
Trailing 1-0 in the second, the Chiefs used a bizarre sequence to take a 4-1 lead. Alberto Garcia singled and Carter beat out an infield hit. As Carter ran to first, the Kernels’ Dallas Morris threw the ball passed first, allowing Garcia to score. With Carter at third, Mark Reed put the Chiefs on top with an RBI single.
A hit-and-run single by Ryan Lilly sent Reed to third and he scored on a wild pitch as Lilly moved to second. Ryne Malone added an RBI with a single to center to cap the four-run inning.
Peoria’s Todd Blackford (9-5) earned the win after striking out five in 5 2/3 innings.
