Illinois senior wrestler Tyrone Byrd of Clinton advanced to the finals of the Midlands Tournament at Evanston on Friday. Byrd, wrestling at 197 pounds and seeded 13th, upset No. 6 seed Nate Moore of Purdue (3-2) in the quarterfinals and No. 2 seed Matt Delguyd of Northwestern (7-2) in the semifinals.
Byrd will face No. 1 seed Wynn Michalak of Central Michigan in the finals. Illinois holds the top spot in the team competition with 94Â½ points, one point ahead of Central Michigan.
Galligan named OVC freshman of the week

Eastern Illinois University freshman Rachel Galligan, a Central Catholic High School graduate, was named Ohio Valley Conference freshman of the week after recording her second career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds in the Panthers' 70-63 overtime victory over IUPUI last week at Indianapolis.
Galligan scored on a put-back basket and made two free throws in overtime to help seal the win. She also had four steals and two blocked shots while playing 30 minutes.
She leads Eastern Illinois in rebounds (6.0 per game), blocked shots (14) and field goal percentage (.556) and is third in scoring (7.8) and steals (14). She ranks third in the conference in blocks.
