West grad Chismark tabbed all-conference
Olivet Nazarene junior forward Stan Chismark, a former Normal West High School basketball star, has been named to the all-Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference first team.
The 6-foot-5 Chismark is averaging a team-high 14.6 points for the 21-9 Tigers, who went 11-1 in the conference to win their first outright league title since 2002. Chismark also has made a team-leading 51 baskets from 3-point range and ranks second on the team with a 6.4 rebounding average and 96 assists.
He was joined on the first team by Olivet Nazarene senior Zach Birkey and sophomore Phil French. The Tigers' Ralph Hodge was named the conference Coach of the Year for the ninth time.
Pegues places for EIU in OVC meet
Normal West High School graduate Brenton Pegues, a sophomore at Eastern Illinois, placed in three events in the Ohio Valley Conference indoor track and field championships last weekend at Nashville, Tenn.
Pegues earned first place as part of the Panthers' distance medley relay. He teamed with Chris Wesson, David Holm and Dan Strackeljahn to win in 10 minutes, 7.89 seconds. He was part of EIU's third-place 1,600 relay, teaming with Brenton Emanuel, Holm and Wesson in a time of 3:22.38.
Pegues also had a fourth-place finish in the 400-meter dash (50.02) to help the Panthers to the men's team title for the sixth straight year.
Braffet sets 5,000 record for Maryland
Normal West High School graduate Meghan Braffet clocked a University of Maryland record while placing second in the 5,000-meter run in the Atlantic Coast Conference indoor track and field championships at Blacksburg, Va., on Saturday. The junior's time of 16 minutes, 36.59 seconds took 12 seconds off the school record she set last year.
Central grad Schmitz 2nd in weight throw
Central Catholic High School graduate Amy Schmitz, a sophomore at the University of Indianapolis, placed second in the 20-pound weight throw with career best toss of 53 feet, ¾ inches in the Great Lakes Valley Conference indoor track and field championships at Crawfordsville, Ind., on Saturday.
