Scott Ota's two home runs helped UIC down Illinois State, 6-1, in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday at Curtis Granderson Stadium in Chicago.
The Redbirds (21-15) took a 1-0 lead in the first when Joe Butler's single drove in Derek Parola. But the Flames (17-13) scored in the first three innings against ISU starter Brett Wicklund, grabbing a 4-1 lead, and seven UIC pitchers blanked ISU the rest of the way.
Wicklund went four innings, allowing six hits and six runs (five earned). He struck out two and walked one.
Joe Aeilts and Joe Butler each had two of ISU's eight hits.
Softball falls: Illinois State rallied to force extra innings before suffering a 6-5, nine-inning loss to DePaul at Chicago.
The Redbirds (12-27) scored two in the sixth and two in the seventh to erase a four-run deficit. Allison Spence and Andrea Coursey each had two of ISU's eight hits. Morgan Day (6-14), the fourth Redbird pitcher, took the loss. DePaul improved to 29-9.
Anstey top MVC athlete: For the fifth time in his career, Illinois State's Jack Anstey has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Male Track Athlete of the Week.
In the Tennessee Relays, Anstey ran 800 meters in a lifetime best of 1 minute, 48.78 seconds to finish second. His time ranks third in ISU history and leads the Valley this season. He ranks eighth in the NCAA West Region and 17th in all of Division I.
A day later, Anstey split a 4:01 on the mile anchor leg in the distance medley relay, in which ISU finished fourth in 9:48.69, a mark which ranks fifth in Redbird history. He continues to sit atop the MVC in the 1,500 at 3:44.07.
Women's golf ends ninth: Caitlin Sims tied for 15th place individually as Illinois State's women's golf team finished ninth in the 10-team Missouri Valley Conference Championships at Chesterton, Ind. Sims shot 77 Tuesday to end at 231. Morgan Savage ended 34th at 84-238.
ISU had a round of 321 to end at 947. Southern Illinois won with a 905 total.
Doubles team wins award: Illinois State's Jana Kustkova and Laura Fitzgerald were tabbed as the Missouri Valley Conference Doubles Team of the Week after ISU's 5-2 win over reigning MVC tournament champion Missouri State. The tandem took down Alye Darter/Mara Presot 6-2 to improve to 8-0 and 3-0 in the MVC.
Softball splits twin bill: Hayley Earl hit a grand slam and Ally Wiegand struck out 14 as Illinois Wesleyan's softball team downed Wisconsin-Whitewater, 6-1, to earn a split of their nonconference doubleheader at Whitewater, Wis.
Earl's grand slam was part of a five-run sixth inning. Colleen Palczynski had a solo homer and Shelby Fulk and Julie Josten each had two hits for IWU (21-6). Wiegand (16-2) allowed six hits and walked none.
IWU dropped the opener, 3-2. Fulk had two of the Titans' six hits and drove in a run. Brea Walker (9-4) took the loss after allowing two earned runs in six innings.
Wiegand honored: Wiegand was selected as a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Softball Player of the Week. A junior pitcher from Downs, Wiegand went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA, 23 strikeouts and no walks in two appearances last week.
CCIWS honors Johnson: IWU's Ben Johnson was tabbed as the CCIW Golfer of the Week for the second time this season. A senior, Johnson helped the Titans win the Indiana Small College Championships last weekend in French Lick, Ind. He finished in second with a two-day score of 141 in the 70-player field.
