David Fallon went 3-for-6 with two RBIs and two runs to lead the Illinois State baseball team to a 9-4 win over Western Illinois on Tuesday at Al D. Boyer Stadium in Macomb.

The Redbirds (32-16 overall) matched their 2010 win total and finished their nonconference schedule with a 22-8 record. WIU fell to 20-33 overall.

Joe Claver (1-0) earned his first career victory, while Brad Sorkin, Jacob Wielebnicki, Justin Hauer and Kenny Long teamed up to limit the Leathernecks to four runs on five hits. Western’s Garrett Bolt (0-3) suffered the loss.

“I thought Claver threw well, with only three earned runs,” ISU coach Mark Kingston said. “Our defense was solid, although I would have liked to see us get a few more hits.”

Although getting only seven hits, the Redbirds took advantage of the 10 walks and four hit batsmen issued by five Leatherneck pitchers.

ISU scored three runs in the first, one in the second, four in the third and closed out its scoring with a single run in the fifth to build a 9-0 lead.

Illinois State returns home to Duffy Bass Field this weekend to wrap up the Missouri Valley Conference regular season with three games against Evansville.
