Former Illinois State javelin star Leigh Petranoff finished ninth in the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials on Saturday at Eugene, Ore.
Petranoff finished with a best of 166 feet, 8 inches, which was just short of her season best of 169-7. She opened with a throw of 163-2 and fininished with a toss of 165-8. It took a throw of 166-9 to get an additional three attempts. Her career best is 191-6.
The top three finishers were Maggie Malone (199-7), Hannah Carson (190-11) and Kara Winger (189-11).
Haywood triumphs: , Bloomington's Savion Haywood won the 143-pound title in the 11th-12th grade division in the 13th annual Midwest Nationals Wrestling Tournament at Shirk Center where 1972 Olympic gold medalist Dan Gable was the guest speaker.
Area runners-up included Deer Creek-Mackinaw's Trace Thomas (135), Prairie Central's Simon Schuler (157) and Eureka's Jake Miller (166). Placing third were Normal Community's Tyler Martin (109) and Mahomet-Seymour's David Griffet (223).
In the 9th-10th grade division, Olympia's Keaton Fogler won at 249 and Normal's Dylan Meserole was second at 95. Third-placers were Eureka's Asher Wiegand (125), Heyworth's Sabe Spencer (118) and Pontiac's Joe Ingold (95).
BNBA 17 Gold win twice: The BNBA 17 Gold advanced to the quarterfinals of the Diamond Sport Top Collegiate Tournament at Normal Community High School by winning twice on Saturday.
The Gold downed Washington, 9-0, as Peyton Dillingham (1-2) pitched a two-hitter. Teammate Andrew Kerdys had two hits and two RBIs while Nick Watson added two doubles and J.D. Villafuerte chipped in two RBIs.
The Gold also topped the Wilmette Waves, 15-6, with help from Daylan Hand's three-run homer in the fourth. Sam Heaton added three hits and three RBIs while Matt Barnes and Ryan Rose each chipped in three hits including a double. Watson (1-2) earned the win on the mound.
The Gold (8-4) will face the Central Illinois Outlaws at 8:30 a.m. Sunday at Normal West High School.
BNBA 18 Gold win: Zach Frey had two hits including a triple to drive in three runs for the BNBA 18 Gold during a 6-2 win over the Evansville Leathernecks in the Diamond Sport Top Collegiate Baseball Tournament at Normal West High School.
Winning pitcher Mike Shepard (3-0), whose team left 16 men on base, tossed a one-hitter while allowing one earned run. The Gold return to action as the No. 1 seed in the elimination round at 8:30 a.m. Sunday at Duffy Bass Field.
