ELMHURST — The No. 16-nationally ranked Illinois Wesleyan women's basketball team clinched sole possession of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin regular-season championship with an 82-61 victory over Elmhurst on Tuesday.
The Titans will take a 22-3 overall record and a 15-1 league mark into Friday and Saturday's CCIW Tournament at Shirk Center to face No. 4 seed Elmhurst (13-12, 9-7).
The Bluejays also lost an 87-61 contest to IWU on Jan. 6. The title was Wesleyan's eighth in school history.
"I thought we played a great end of the first quarter, I thought our third quarter was really good, and our second quarter defense was awesome," said IWU coach Mia Smith.
"Our bus is really excited. We were excited on the way up for the opportunity, and we're even more excited now that we were able to accomplish that first goal (winning the CCIW). To put it (the tournament) on the campus of Illinois Wesleyan is really exciting."
Freshman Riley Brovelli became the 10th Titan to secure team-high scoring honors this season by notching 13. Ashley Schneider added 12, Molly McGraw 11 and Raven Hughes 10 for IWU, which shot 49.2 percent from the field.
Hughes went 5-for-5 from the field. Schneider grabbed seven rebounds to help IWU stay within 41-39 of Elmhurst on the boards. Ehresman had five of IWU's 19 assists.
The Titans won the points-off-turnover battle, 19-4. Their bench outscored its counterpart, 38-24.
Elmhurst received 17 points from Kaela Jones while Mikaela Eppard added 13 points and 13 rebounds. The Bluejays committed 22 turnovers and shot 34.5 percent from the field.
IWU trailed after one quarter, 21-19, but enjoyed a 39-31 lead at intermission. The Titans dominated the third period, 26-15. Their biggest lead was 27 with 5:57 left.
