SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The Illinois State women's basketball team wasted a perfect shooting night from Paige Saylor in a 75-58 Missouri Valley Conference loss to Missouri State on Sunday at JQH Arena. With the loss, the Redbirds fall to 11-13 overall and 5-8 in conference play while the Bears improve to 14-10 and 10-3 in the Valley.
Saylor was 6-for-6 from the field, including three 3-pointers, for a 15-point performance. ISU got 17 points from Hannah Green while Simone Goods chipped in 14. Green also grabbed nine rebounds and handed out four assists.
Viria Livingston pulled down a team-high 10 boards as the Redbirds owned a 32-21 advantage on the glass. Turnovers were costly for the Redbirds who committed 21 while the Bears only gave up the ball 10 times. The 75 points scored by Missouri State were the most yielded by ISU this season.
Illinois State held a 15-11 lead after the first period before Missouri State started the second quarter with a 9-0 run to go on top, 20-15. The Bears outscored the Redbirds, 25-10, in the quarter to take a 36-25 lead at the half and never looked back.
"I thought we competed pretty well for three quarters. We were just incapable of making plays," said ISU head coach Kristen Gillespie. "Sundays are all about energy and effort and I wasn't pleased with either one of those."
Missouri State was led by Liza Fruendt with 18 points. Brice Calip (15), Aubrey Buckley (14) and Danielle Gitzen (13) also scored in double figures for the Bears, who shot 55 percent (27 of 49) for the contest.
Illinois State returns to Doug Collins Court next weekend to wrap up the home portion of their schedule. The Redbirds meet Indiana State on Friday at 7 p.m. before squaring off against Evansville on Sunday at 2 p.m.
