CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — Northern Iowa poured in 14 3-pointers to hand the winless Illinois State women's basketball team a 71-43 Missouri Valley Conference loss on Sunday at the McLeod Center.
Katy Winge led the Redbirds (0-14, 0-3 MVC) with 12 points while Sue Crump and Taylor Stewart both added six points. Colleene Smith grabbed a team-high seven rebounds followed by Mackenzie Freeman with five. The Redbirds shot 34 percent from the field, while the Panthers (8-7, 4-0) connected on 47 percent of their shot attempts.
“Finding a set starting lineup is tough right now,” head coach Barb Smith said. “We are trying to find ways to start the game off strong. Our start wasn’t great, but the start of the second half was much better. We are still working as a team, and we had some good plays. Northern Iowa and Drake are both high-power offenses. So, we knew this weekend would be tough. We are still growing and learning, and once we get that first win, we will be ready to go.”
UNI opened the game with a 9-0 run followed by a 15-0 outburst to take a 24-4 lead which saw the Redbirds go scoreless for a stretch of nearly six minutes. The half ended with Panthers upping the margin to 39-15 and never looking back the rest of the way.
The Redbirds return home Friday to host Evansville at 7 p.m., before welcoming Indiana State Sunday at 2 p.m.
