The Illinois State volleyball team dropped the first set, but rallied to take the next three to score a 20-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-20 win over Tulsa on Friday in the opening round of the Marquette Invitational at the Al McGuire Center in Milwaukee, Wis.

Kaylee Martin led the ISU attack with 18 kills. The Redbirds hit at a .417 clip in the third set and .211 for the match in improving to 8-2. Tulsa had three players in double figures in kills, but fell to 7-3.

Stef Jankiewicz dished out 39 assists and had 13 digs for ISU, while Courtney Pence contributed 23 digs.

ISU will face No. 6 nationally-ranked Wisconsin at 11 a.m. Saturday, before closing out play in the Marquette Invitational against the No. 21 host school at 7 o'clock Saturday night.

Soccer tops Toledo: The ISU soccer team rebounded quickly from an early 1-0 deficit to defeat Toledo, 2-1, in a nonconference game at Toledo, Ohio.

After Toledo's Hannah Scafaria got the Rockets on the board in the 29th minute of the match, ISU's Mikayla Unger came off the bench to answer just five minutes later with her second goal of the season. Alix McArthur, who also subbed midway in the first half, scored the game winner with under three minutes remaining in the first half to lift the Redbirds to a 3-4-2 record.

ISU goalkeeper Haley Smith, the reigning Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week, had three saves. ISU faces Omaha on Sunday at noon at Adelaide Street Field.

Men's cross country wins Invite, women third: Personal best performances by Kevin Koski, Cody Baele and Jack Anstey paced the ISU men's cross country team to the title of the Illinois State Invite at Weibring Golf Club.

Koski's time of 25:18 was fourth-best overall among individuals. Baele (25:18.40), and Anstey (25:21) were fifth and sixth, respectively, on the 8K course.

ISU ended with 41 points to top second-place North Central (48). Missouri (72) finished third.

Rachel Hickey finished in the top 10 to lead the ISU women to their third-place finish. Missouri (20) won with Loyola (50) second.

Baseball prospect camp: Illinois State baseball will host a high school prospect camp on Oct. 14. The camp will be one day and open to all players in high school and junior college. Each player will receive an Illinois State baseball shirt at the end of the camp.

The camp will provide campers the opportunity to hear about the academic, strength and conditioning and mental aspects of Division I baseball, along with a tour of the ISU campus. For more information, visit


Volleyball falls to No. 1 Calvin: The IWU volleyball team grabbed a first set victory, but dropped the next three in a 17-25, 25-23, 25-17, 25-23 loss to top-ranked Calvin in the DePauw Tournament at Greencastle, Ind.

Rachel Burkman had 18 kills and 14 digs for the Titans with Tyler Brown adding 15 kills and 16 digs. Leah Seielstad had 19 assists and Amber Juarez 17 digs.

No. 11 IWU fell to 5-4 with the loss while Calvin improved to 8-0.

Men's soccer tops Central: The IWU men's soccer team received goals from Donovan Malone, Zack Kokes and Patrick Hickey and defeated Central College, 3-1, at Pella, Iowa.

Malone's third goal of the year came on an assist from Jack Dilger and put the Titans up 1-0 at the 25:36 mark. After Central had tied the game, Kokes gave IWU a 2-1 halftime lead with an assist from Ryan Bull.

Hickey's second-half insurance goal was unassisted.

IWU (4-1-0) outshot Central 18-7. Titan goalkeeper Alex Ruckstaetter had one save.
