No. 5-ranked Franklin & Marshall built an 11-3 halftime lead Saturday and went on to a 19-7 win over Illinois Wesleyan's women's lacrosse team in a third-round NCAA Division III Tournament match at Middlebury, Vt.
Freshman Cassandra Jones had three goals for IWU, which ended its season 18-3. Riley Rooney and Grainne Kelly added two each. Sam Bidlack had two assists, with Kelly and Dani Engelbreit contributing one apiece.
The Diplomats (17-4) outshot IWU 33-19. IWU sophomore goalkeeper Janaye Godfrey had five ground balls and made nine saves.
Trio baseball MVPs: Senior Nick Brune and juniors Garrett Shea and Nick Figus were selected as the most valuable players for the Illinois Wesleyan baseball team, which finished 24-19 and 14-10 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.
Brune also earned Most Valuable Pitcher honors for the second straight season. He was 5-3 with a 3.22 earned run average and tied for the team lead with three saves. He had 69 strikeouts and 13 walks in 72⅔ innings.
Shea led the team with six home runs, 16 doubles and 34 runs batted in while hitting .342. Figus also was named the Titans' Best Defensive Player. He led IWU with a .399 average and had 12 doubles, five triples and three home runs.
Junior third baseman Dalton Fletcher and freshman outfielder Evan Ranneklev were chosen as the co-winners of the team's Top Newcomer award. Senior catcher Joe Marras won the "Jason Jones Titan Award" given for spirit, dedication and competitive attitude.
Tattini nets award at Utah: University of Utah freshman Madison Tattini, a Central Catholic High School grad, was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Regional Rookie of the Year.
Tattini won more than 20 matches playing at No. 2 singles. She also teamed with Brianna Chisholm for a No. 49 ranking.
