Kaylee Martin pounded out 16 kills Saturday night to power Illinois State's volleyball team to a three-set victory over Loyola in a Missouri Valley Conference match at Redbird Arena.
ISU (15-5, 7-1) had a .319 hitting percentage to Loyola's .139. Ali Line added nine kills for the Redbirds in the 25-20, 25-16, 25-16 win.
ISU's Stef Jankiewicz handed out 42 assists, while Courtney Pence had 19 digs and Alyssa Kronberg added 10.
The Redbirds are at home again at 6 p.m. Monday against rival Bradley.
Soccer wins in OT: Mikayla Unger scored in overtime to lift Illinois State's women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Loyola at Chicago.
Riley O'Brien had the assist on the winning goal as the Redbirds improved to 7-7-2 overall and 2-2-0 in the Missouri Valley. Also scoring for ISU were Abby Basler and Logan Ziegler, while Hannah Mueller and Alissa Ramsden chipped in with assists.
Redbird goalkeeper Haley Smith made four saves. Loyola fell to 6-6-1 and 3-1-0 in the MVC.
Mattes 29th in Pre-Nationals: Senior Kyle Mattes led Illinois State with a 29th place finish in the 8K White Race during the NCAA Pre-Nationals cross country meet at Madison, Wis.
Mattes ran a personal-best 24 minutes, 18.70 seconds to improve to fifth place all-time in ISU history. Teammate Cody Baele was 57th (24:44.7), Jack Anstey was 110th (25:08.60) and Kevin Koski took 120th (25:13.00) out of 232 runners.
The Redbirds were 21st out of 35 teams.
The ISU women were led by Audrey Janik in 136th in the 6K race with a personal-best 22:04.38.
Women's soccer clips Carthage: The IWU women's soccer team received first-half goals from Flower Edington and Rosie Pettenuzzo to down Carthage, 2-0, in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play in Kenosha, Wis.
Ellie Crabtree had two assists and Megan O'Neal one for the Titans (10-2-1, 3-1 in the CCIW). Goalkeeper Kelli McCarthy had five saves.
