NORMAL — Two high potential receivers have signed national letters of intent to play football at Illinois State.

High school seniors Elijah “E.J.” Smoot of Beggs, Okla., and Taylor Grimes of Godley, Texas, have joined the Redbirds.

The 6-foot-2, 180-pound Smoot caught 54 passes for 1,100 yards and 14 touchdowns as a senior.

“He’s fast with really good ball skills,” ISU coach Brock Spack said. “He has some work to do academically (to qualify).”

The 5-11, 170-pound Grimes reeled in 64 passes for 1,361 yards and 14 touchdowns his final prep season.

The Redbirds plan to greyshirt Grimes, according to Spack, which means he would not enroll at ISU until January of 2019.

“He plays a lot of sports so it will time out better for us and be better timing for him,” said Spack. “He’s a really good athlete. He’s more of a slot (receiver) but he could play outside.”

Spring into football: ISU will hold its Pro Day on March 21. Former Redbird players will go through NFL Combine type testing for professional scouts.

The first practice of spring drills is set for March 24. The annual spring public scrimmage is scheduled for April 21.
