SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- After a frost-delayed tee time, the Illinois State women’s golf team got off to a cold start Thursday and finished the first round last in the 24-team NCAA Central Regional at the Warren Golf Course. ISU shot 329.
“This wasn’t the day we were hoping for to kick off this championship, but all is not lost,” said ISU coach Darby Sligh. “We learned so much from this experience today both individually and as a team.”
Freshman Brianna Cooper led the Redbirds with a six-over-par 78, tying her for 51st place. Terra Miller is tied for 94th (81) while Rachel Powers and Hannah Bachman are tied for 118th (85) and Katie Jean is tied for 122nd (86).
The Redbirds will try to close a 10-stroke gap on 23rd-place Morehead State beginning at 7 a.m. today. UCLA (291) leads by four shots over LSU. The co-leaders are Notre Dame’s Nicole Zhang and UCLA’s Ani Gulugian at 71.
