The Illinois State men's golf team won the 12-team Badger Invitational by four strokes on Tuesday at Madison, Wis.

The Redbirds shot a 9-under 855, the 10th best score in tournament history. Kansas (859) was second followed by Iowa State (863) and Nevada (863).

“I am beyond proud of this group,” said Coach Ray Kralis. “They handled themselves so well from start to finish. Leading wire-to-wire isn’t as easy as it sounds, especially in a field like this.”

Five Redbirds cracked the top 30 led by David Perkins, who tied for third with an 8-under 208. Teammate Trent Wallace tied for seventh (213) while Andrew O'Brien tied for 11th (216) and David Rauer tied for 20th (219).

Nevada's Joey Vrzich shot 65-203 to win by three strokes.


Volleyball team falls: The No. 11-ranked IWU volleyball team 95-3) lost to the host University of Chicago, 25-21, 21-25, 25-15, 25-23. The Maroons improved to 9-0.

Tyler Brown and Jessica McCall led the Titans with 16 kills apiece while Rachel Burkman added 15. Leah Seielstad added 30 assists. Brown also had a team-high 28 digs.

Audrey Scrafford had 22 kills for Chicago, which outhit IWU, .266 to .215.

Soccer duo honored: IWU's Donovan Malone and Alex Ruckstaetter were selected as the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Men’s Soccer Players of the Week on Tuesday. 

Malone, a freshman forward from Houston, scored twice for last week. He scored in a 1-0 shutout of Knox on Wednesday and in a 4-2 win at Dubuque on Friday. 

Ruckstaetter, a junior goalkeeper from Glen Ellyn, made one save in the lightning-shortened victory over Knox, as well as three saves at Dubuque.


Noel nets weekly award: Eureka College sophomore linebacker Logan Noel has been named the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Defensive Player of the Week. Noel had six tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss and a sack in the Red Devils' 38-6 nonconference rout of Iowa Wesleyan on Saturday night.

Noel helped Eureka limit Iowa Wesleyan to 98 total yards and negative-13 rushing yards. Eureka shoots for its first 3-0 start since 1991 when Finlandia visits McKinzie Field for the NACC-MIAA Challenge Series game at 1 p.m. Saturday.
