Senior Sami King will lead the Illinois State gymnastics team as it opens its season on the road against Southeast Missouri State on Sunday in Cape Girardeau, Mo.

King, who placed 11th on the balance beam in last year's NCAA regional, heads a group of 10 returnees being joined by five incoming freshmen.

“We have a lot more depth this year, which makes the lineup hard to choose,” said Redbirds coach Bob Conkling. “Depth is great to have and is something we lacked last year.”

SEMO won the Midwest Independent Conference Championship a year ago.

“This meet will be a good test for the season,” said Conkling. “It will show us where we are at. We are going to be really strong on bars and beam this year. It will ultimately come down to who hits at this meet, but I believe it will be a very close meet.”
