Alyssa Wiebel's fifth-inning grand slam could not save the Illinois State softball team during a 10-9 loss to North Carolina State at Tampa, Fla., on Friday.

The Redbirds (0-2) watched Wiebel collect six RBIs off her two hits. Teammate Andrea Coursey also had two of ISU's six hits. Starter Morgan Day (0-1) took the loss after allowing four runs on six hits over four innings.

North Carolina State (1-1) had 10 hits, including homers by Brigette Nordberg and April Visser. The Wolf Pack led, 10-1, after four innings.

Illinois State ended the day with a 15-0 loss to No. 5 nationally-ranked Florida. Allison Spence singled for ISU's only hit in the five-inning game.

The Redbirds hope to get into the win column on Saturday when they face No. 6-ranked Arizona at 4:45 p.m. before closing out the weekend against No. 14 Michigan on Sunday.

Nelson, Smith shine in track: Luke Nelson placed third in the pole vault (16-8.75) and Kameesha Smith fourth in the high jump (5-7.25) to highlight ISU efforts in the Music City Challenge indoor track meet at Nashville, Tenn.

The Redbirds also placed fifth in the 4,000-meter distance medley relay in 12:14.88.
