Former Illinois State standout thrower Brittany Smith posted the top mark in the world this year with her effort in the women's shot put Saturday in a meet at Illinois Wesleyan's Shirk Center.
Smith, now the director of track and field operations at ISU, had a winning toss of 62 feet, 4½ inches while competing unattached. Fellow American Rebecca O’Brien has the next-best mark in the world this year at 58-½.
Smith is a 10-time All-American, two-time NCAA runner-up and an Olympic Trials qualifier in the shot put and hammer throw. She holds all of ISU's records in the indoor/outdoor shot put, hammer and weight throw.
Herrmann earns CCIW award: Illinois Wesleyan's Angela Herrmann was named a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week. The junior from Schaumburg placed first in the 60-meter dash (7.80) and the 200 (26.07) at the IWU Invitational. Both times were personal bests.
Her 60 time is currently ranked fourth and her 200 time is seventh on the Division III Track & Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS). Both times rank first in the CCIW.
