Illinois State's Mike Hollenbeck was named the Missouri Valley Conference's baseball player of the week after collecting 11 hits in four games.
The senior catcher drove in eight runs and had one homer and one double. He drew five walks while striking out just once. The homer was part of a five-hit performance Saturday in a 13-12 loss at Western Illinois. He reached base six times in a 22-4 win the following day, extending his current streak to 11 straight plate appearances.
Jensen honored again: Curt Jensen captured his fourth-consecutive MVC Athlete of the Week nod in track and field Tuesday for his record-setting mark in the shot put at the Redbird Invite on Saturday.
Jensen broke his own conference and Illinois State shot put records with a toss of 66 feet, 8.5 inches. He added a second place in the discus with a personal best of 178-7.
Soccer schedule set: ISU's 18-game soccer schedule released Tuesday includes five matches against teams that joined the Redbirds in the NCAA Tournament field last season.
The 12-game nonconference slate includes contests with tourney participants Texas A&M, DePaul, Boston College, Western Michigan and Milwaukee. The Eagles reached last year's Elite Eight while the Aggies advanced to the Sweet 16.
ISU opens the regular season against Northern Illinois on Aug. 22 at Adelaide Street Field. Boston College visits on Sept. 7, while the six-game Missouri Valley schedule starts with a Sept. 28 home match with Missouri State.
NCAA regional times changed: The times for Friday's games in the NCAA Division III regional hosted by Illinois Wesleyan have been changed. Anderson (29-7) and Fontbonne (34-5) will play at 1 p.m. at IWU Field, followed by the Titans (37-5) battling Lake Forest (26-8) at 3:30 p.m. Times for Saturday and Sunday remain the same.
Times set for CCIW baseball tourney: Second-seeded IWU will face North Park in the 7 p.m. second game of the CCIW baseball tournament on Thursday at Moline.
The Titans (21-17) and Vikings (23-15) follow the opener between top-seeded host Augustana (28-10) and North Central (24-13).
Baseball downs Elgin: Jared Hendren and Nolan Lodden each had two hits and drove in three runs to help Heartland Community College to a 10-5 victory over Elgin at the Corn Crib.
Heartland (37-11) led 10-0 after five innings. Trevor Storie (6-0) went seven innings, giving up five runs on seven hits while striking out six. Keith Mahler went the final two innings to earn his second save.
Nonnemachers reap honors: Saint Xavier sophomore Nicole Nonnemacher, a Normal Community graduate, was named the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference's softball pitcher of the year after posting a 0.36 ERA with 249 strikeouts at 16 shutouts.
Nonnemacher and her sister, senior pitcher Megan Nonnemacher, were among six Saint Xavier players on the all-CCAC first team. Megan Nonnemacher, also an NCHS product, posted a 21-2 record with a 1.17 ERA and was also named the school's female student-athlete of the year.
