Illinois State junior left-hander Colton Johnson has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week.

Johnson appeared in two games with a 1-0 record and a 0.00 ERA. He hurled 8 1/3 innings and allowed one hit, struck out nine, walked four and held opponents to a .040 batting average.

Johnson pitched 5 1/3 innings against Illinois, giving up one hit and striking out three. Saturday, he got the win in the first game of a doubleheader against Missouri State, walking one and fanning six in three innings.

The Kewanee native is 4-0 with a 2.31 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 39 innings.

Yarbrough chosen for Portsmouth event: Former Illinois State basketball standout Milik Yarbrough has been selected to compete in the Portsmouth (Va.) Invitational. Yarbrough was named to the All-Missouri Valley Conference second team this past season after averaging team-highs of 16.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 3.1 assists.

The P.I.T annually invites 64 of the best college basketball players (seniors) to participate in a four-day, 12-game tournament in front of representatives from every NBA team as well as international scouts.

Women's golf in eighth: Illinois State was in eighth place after two rounds of the Missouri Valley Conference Women's Golf Tournament at Chesterton, Ind. The Redbirds shot 312-314-626 to trail leader Drake by 28 strokes. ISU was led by Caitlin Sims and Morgan Savage, who were in a tie for 22nd place at 154.

The leaders were Northern Iowa's Sydney Eaton and Indiana State's Thilda Staubo at 2-over par 146 entering Tuesday's final round.


Titans sweep men's lacrosse awards: Illinois Wesleyan's Ricky Smith and Max Bousky were selected as the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Men's Lacrosse Players of the Week.

Smith, a freshman attacker, had seven goals and five assists, a .636 shots percentage and an .818 shots on goal percentage in a 29-20 win over Elmhurst. Bousky, a sophomore face-off specialist, was 17 of 19 (89 percent) on face-offs and had 10 ground balls against Elmhurst.

Godfrey nets honor: IWU's Janaye Godfrey was named a CCIW Women's Lacrosse Player of the Week. The sophomore goalie earned her first shutout in a 23-0 win over Elmhurst and had 11 saves in a 16-5 win at Carthage.


Baseball sweeps pair: Shane Gorman went the distance on the mound and Billy Mote had two hits as Heartland downed Lincoln Land, 2-1, to compete a sweep of a baseball doubleheader at the Corn Crib. The Hawks won the opener, 2-1, in eight innings.

Gorman allowed seven hits, struck out two and walked two. Sam Olson and Shakur Jackson had RBIs for the 20th-ranked Hawks (21-9, 11-5).

In the opener, Josh Stivers had three hits, including the game-winning RBI in the eighth. Paul Turelli struck out the side in his inning of relief to get the win. Starter Garner Spoljaric struck out nine.
