Illinois State track and field has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Program of the Year, the Missouri Valley Conference announced Wednesday.
Scoring is based on the team’s finish at each MVC Championship in cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field (i.e. one point for first place, 10 points for 10th place) with the lowest total score for all six championships (three men’s, three women’s) determining the winner.
Illinois State totaled 14 points, followed by Indiana State (15.5) and Northern Iowa (21).
The Redbirds swept the Valley indoor men's and women's championships, with the women also winning the outdoor title. It was the first time since 1997 the ISU women won the indoor and outdoor MVC crowns.
Miller makes all-region: Recent Major League Baseball draft pick Owen Miller of Illinois State was named to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings NCAA Division I All-Midwest Region First Team.
Miller, a shortstop, led the Redbirds in batting with a .384 average and in stolen bases with eight. He was second on the team in runs (45) and had 15 doubles, six home runs, 35 RBIs and a single-season school record of 88 hits.
He was drafted in the third round of the MLB draft by the San Diego Padres with the 84th overall pick.
Volleyball assistant promoted: ISU volleyball coach Leah Johnson has promoted director of volleyball operations Emily Siefken to full-time status in that same role.
Siefken entered her first season in the position in 2017 after serving as men’s golf operations graduate assistant in the 2016-17 academic year. She is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the volleyball program, handling team logistics, team schedules, team travel and serving as a liaison between a variety of departments within ISU Athletics.
Siefken earned a bachelor’s degree from Monmouth College in 2016 and recently graduated with her master’s from ISU.
