The Illinois State volleyball team dropped its opening two matches in the Buckeye Invitational, losing to Ohio State in the Friday morning opener before falling to Miami (Ohio) at Columbus, Ohio.

Sarah Kushner had 10 kills and Stef Jankiewicz 27 assists in the Redbirds' 25-21, 25-18, 27-25 loss to Ohio State. Kendal Meier contributed 13 digs.

The Redbirds rebounded from the loss to the host school to grab a hard-fought, 30-28 opening-set victory in the afternoon match against Miami before losing the next three by margins of 25-22, 25-17 and 27-25.

Led by a team-high eight blocks by freshman Nicole Lund, the Redbirds out-blocked the RedHawks 15-9, but fell to 7-4 on the season.

Kaylee Martin led the ISU attack with 16 kills in the Miami match with Kushner adding 13. Jankiewicz had 47 assists while Meier once more led the Redbirds in digs with 23.

ISU returns to action for the finale of the tournament against Dayton at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Soccer posts win: The Illinois State soccer team downed North Florida, 5-0, at Jacksonville, Fla., behind a second career hat trick from junior Abby Basler.

Redshirt sophomore Sarah LaFayette and senior Alix McArthur also scored for the Redbirds (5-4-0). Basler's other hat trick came on Oct. 1, 2016 at Chicago State.

Haley Smith and Jenny Scara both spent time in goal for ISU, with Smith posting two saves and Scara one.

ILLINOIS WESLEYAN

Volleyball falls to Hope: The Illinois Wesleyan volleyball team suffered a five-set loss to No. 20 Hope College at Shirk Center in the Holiday Inn Express Classic II.

The Titans shook off a 25-22 opening set loss and went on to claim set two 25-21 and set three 25-19 to go up 2-1 in the match. Hope forced a decisive fifth set with a 25-13 win, before completing the comeback with a 15-9 win in set five.

Junior Jessica McCall had a match-high 17 kills for IWU to go with 15 digs. Freshman Grace Sanders added 14 kills and 11 digs, while sophomore Madi Corey had 19 assists and 13 digs. Junior Caitlin Meyer also had 19 assists.

Sophomore Amber Juarez added 18 digs.
