After getting a walkoff homer from Alex Cavilla in its first game Saturday, Illinois State's softball team settled for a split on the day in the Littlewood Classic at Tempe, Ariz.
Shannon Felde hit a solo homer for one of ISU's two hits as the Redbirds (3-6) finished the day with a 9-1 five-inning loss to No. 18 Arizona State (7-1).
In ISU's first game, senior Cavilla's game-winning shot in the bottom of the seventh gave ISU a 3-2 victory over San Diego (6-3).
Allison Spence started the rally with her third leadoff walk and Riley Strandgard followed with a single to center. A wild pitch moved the Redbird runners into scoring position before Cavilla drilled her walkoff homer to center off Halle Kyler (3-1).
Morgan Day (1-2) pitched two innings in relief of Sarah Finck, striking out two and allowing one hit — a solo homer by Kailey Hill.
The host Sun Devils got homers from Jade Gotarez and DeNae Chatmark in support of Breanna Macha (3-0). Felde (0-2) started in the circle for ISU, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks in 2⅔ innings.
Baseball postponed: ISU's baseball game at Arkansas State was postponed after rain made the Tomlinson Stadium field conditions unplayable. The teams will play a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. Sunday.
Redbirds win five events: Whitney Ward, Charde Golliday, Sydney Laufenberg, Brandy Thomas and Brandon Gage picked up individual victories as the ISU track and field team finished its indoor regular season at the Orange and Blue Open in Champaign.
Ward captured the women's 400-meter dash in 58.33 seconds, with teammate Jaclyn Greci placing second in 58.48. Golliday claimed the long jump title with a distance of 18 feet, 5¼ inches, Laufenberg topped the weight throw at 55-8¼ and Brandy Thomas led a top-three sweep for ISU in the shot put with a mark of 45-¾.
Gage won the men's 400 with a time of 50.12. Luke Nelson placed second in the pole vault with a personal best 16-8.
Men's lacrosse rolls: James Maibuecher scored six goals and Tanner Nelson added five as the IWU men's lacrosse team blitzed to a 29-12 win over Alma in its season opener at Alma, Mich.
Bailey Marth, Will Rossi, Nick Winter and Wil Laidlaw added three goals apiece for the Titans, who led 19-6 at halftime and finished with 50 shots on goal while allowing only 22.
Six winners at DePauw: IWU had six individual winners and the Titan women won the team title at the DePauw Indoor Classic at Greencastle, Ind.
Jillian Runyon won the 60-meter dash in 8.03 just ahead of teammate Becca Anderson (8.07) and Amelia Glueck took the long jump at 17-8¼. Karly Goodman's second-place wight throw of 57-9½ broke her own school record by four inches.
Titan men placing first were Zach Anderson in the weight throw (55-3¾), Jake Stewart in the long jump (20-11¼), Laurence Henderson in the high jump (6-6 3/4) and Ethan Kett in the pole vault (13-11¼).
The IWU women finished with 130 points to win the nine-team event by 44. The men placed tied for fourth among 10 teams.
Eureka men bounce Fontbonne: The Eureka College basketball team raced to a 29-point halftime lead and coasted to a 93-76 victory over Fontbonne in the regular season finale on Saturday at Eureka.
Hank Thomas scored a game-high 27 points for the Red Devils (18-7, 13-5) with Shea Feehan adding 25. Dakota Bennington led Eureka on the boards with a game-high nine rebounds.
Eureka women win: Samantha Sarnes netted 20 points as the Eureka College women clinched the No. 2 seed in the SLIAC tournanent with a 78-50 win over Fontbonne at Eureka.
Kerrigan Dura added 19 points and 12 rebounds for the Red Devils (18-7, 13-3). Lexi Dooley also had a double-double with 14 and 11.
