PINEHURST, N.C. — Rob Wuethrich of Bloomington eagled his first hole Monday en route to a 2-over-par 72 on Pinehurst Resort & Country Club's No. 4 course in the U.S. Amateur's first round of stroke-play qualifying.

Wuethrich, who is tied for 73rd in the 312-man field, will play Pinehurst No. 2 on Tuesday before the cut to the low 64 for match play beginning Wednesday.

Two Illinois State golfers, Daniel Anfield of Channahon and David Perkins of East Peoria, struggled on Pinehurst No. 2 on Monday. Anfield fired 81 and Perkins shot 84.

Wuethrich, who will be a junior at Illinois Wesleyan, began on the ninth hole Monday and eagled the par-5. He then shot 40 on the back nine before finishing with seven pars and a birdie on the front.

Brandon Wu of Scarsdale, N.Y., fired 65 on Pinehurst No. 4 for Monday's low score. The best score on Pinehurst No. 2, which will host its fourth U.S. Open in 2024, was 68.
