The Illinois Wesleyan softball team will square off with Trine University at 4 p.m. on Thursday in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Softball Championships at Tyler, Texas.

The Titans, last year's national runner-up, received a No. 2 seed in the eight-team finals after disposing of College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin rival Carthage on Saturday in the super regional held at IWU Field.

IWU will be making its fourth straight appearance in the finals and enters Thursday's opener with a 38-8 record.

Trine is making its 12th straight NCAA tournament appearance after receiving an at-large bid this year. The Thunder won the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association regular season crown, but fell short in the league's postseason tournament.

Trine enters the finals ranked fifth nationally in home runs and seventh in slugging percentage. The Thunder have belted 44 home runs this season and sport a 35-6 record.

St. Thomas (Minn.) has received the No. 1 seed.

Play will continue in the double elimination tournament through May 28.
