TAMPA, Fla. — Emme Olson and Taylor Vanderpool belted home runs, but the Illinois State softball team dropped an 11-4 decision to No. 19 Michigan in the finale of the USF Opening Weekend Invitational at USF Stadium.
Olson, an Olympia High School graduate, belted her first career home run over the left-field fence to lead off the fifth inning. Just an inning earlier, Vanderpool launched her first career homer.
ISU's Allison Spence delivered a two-run single in the bottom of the first after Michigan had taken a 5-0 lead. Andrea Coursey also singled to account for ISU's only other hit.
Michigan pounded out 16 hits against three ISU pitchers. Starting pitcher Shannon Felde took the loss after giving up seven hits and seven runs over the first 1⅓ innings. Only two of the runs were earned.
The Redbirds went winless over the weekend and will take their 0-5 record into next weekend's Littlewood Classic, hosted by Arizona State, in Tempe, Ariz.
