SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The top-seeded Illinois State softball team was upset by fifth-seeded Missouri State, 4-2, in the semifinals of the Missouri Valley Conference tournament on Friday.
ISU, which swept the Bears during the regular season, stranded seven baserunners and committed two errors that led to two unearned runs.
ISU (35-17, 21-5 MVC) will await the announcement of the NCAA Tournament field on Sunday night to see if its season continues.
Nichelle Harrison went 3 for 3 with a triple and a run scored, and Kara Nelson was 2 for 4 with an RBI.
Jordan Birch (17-6) took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits while striking out four and walking two in 5 2/3 innings. Megan Warner gave up one hit and struck out two over the final 1 1/3 innings of relief.
Bears starter Natalie Rose struck out nine hitters. She struck out Abby Olson with a runner on base to end the game.
Missouri State will face Drake in the championship game Saturday.
