English loses on 19th: Bing Singhsumalee of Naperville sank a chip-in on the 19th hole Friday to edge Bloomington’s Lauren English, 1-up, in the championship match of the 80th Illinois State Women’s Amateur Golf Championship at Wheaton.
Singhsumalee was playing on her home course of Cantigny Golf Club. The 16-year-old is a student at Waubonsie Valley High School.
English, a former University High School star, is a junior at the University of Iowa.

Bell wins national title: Central Catholic High School graduate Sarah Bell won the age 17-18 girls pole vault in the USA Youth Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Edwardsville. The Vanderbilt recruit, a three-time state high school champion, cleared 12 feet, 1½ inches.
Other top-three area finishers were Prairie Central’s Kassadee Ifft in the 15-16 pole vault (2nd, 11-11¾), University High’s Gabi Jacobs in the 17-18 discus (2nd, 136-3), Normal Community’s Brooke Catherine in the 15-16 pole vault (3rd, 11-5¾), Normal West’s Kyrin Tucker in the 17-18 shot put (3rd, 54-1) and Mahomet-Seymour’s Morgan Young in the 17-18 discus (3rd, 132-4).

McIntosh grabs seven boards: Incoming ISU freshman MiKyle McIntosh had two points and seven rebounds Friday for Canada in a 79-66 loss to Croatia in the preliminary round of the FIBA U19 World Championships in Prague, Czech Republic.
McIntosh played 20 minutes and made one of six field goal attempts. ISU sophomore Kaza Keane played seven minutes for Canada and contributed one point and one assist.
Canada meets Korea at 8:30 a.m. today.
Snipes post win: Adam Ariola had four hits, scored three runs and drove in one to lead the Lexington Snipes to a 9-2 victory over the Northwest (Ind.) Oilmen late Thursday night in a Midwest Collegiate League game delayed three hours by rain at Whiting.
Eric Phillis added three hits and an RBI, while Jacob Hendren had a single, double and two RBI for the Snipes (12-4, 8-4). Trevor Storie (1-0) struck out six in six innings.
18 Gold cruises: Matthew James had a triple, three doubles and drove in four runs to pace the BNBA 18 Gold to a 12-1 win over the St. Charles American Legion at the St. Louis Invitational.
Alex Jefferson added three hits, including a double and a triple, and two RBI for the Gold (15-0). Winning pitcher Josh Appel (2-0) had three hits with a double and an RBI. He pitched six innings, allowing four hits and no earned runs.
17 Gold wins, loses: Noah Johnson pitched a four-hitter and Travis Auer had two hits and two RBI in the BNBA 17 Gold’s 7-1 victory over the Michigan Elite in the Notre Dame Wood Classic at South Bend, Ind. The Gold (6-4) also lost to the St. Louis Crush, 6-1, and is 2-1 in pool play.
Johnson (2-0) struck out eight and walked three. Ryan Frye had an RBI double against St. Louis. The Gold opened the tourney Thursday by beating South Bend Penn, 3-1. Mitch Thomas got the win and Ben Wylde had a two-run single.
Avanti’s Angels split pair: Nicole Nonnemacher pitched a four-hitter and Kenzie James had two hits to lead the BNGSA 18-under Avanti’s Angels to a 6-3 win over the Marengo Mud Hens in the Firecracker Tournament at Normal.
Nonnemacher (6-3) struck out seven and walked four. Avanti’s Angels (9-6) also lost in pool play, 3-2, to Streator. Losing pitcher Becca Oldham had two hits, including a double, and an RBI.
