NORMAL — Fourth-year Calvary Baptist Academy basketball coach Michael Touma believes his team has the talent to show improvement over last season.
"We were down a little bit last year," said Touma, whose team is 2-3 this season after a 5-24 record last season. "We have a chance with this team to do some things we weren't capable of last year. We have some speed on this team we'll try to use to our advantage."
The Crusaders return three starters in senior Daniel Howerton, senior Michael Adams and junior Tommy Horine, who is averaging nine points and eight rebounds.
Other starters have been sophomore Josh Borst, who is leading the team at 13 points per game, and junior Zach Howerton.
Calvary girls 2-2
First-year coach Tammi Bonner has watched her Crusaders' girls team split its first four games.
"We're short but we're quick. Our defense is really great," she said. "We put in a halfcourt trap. We're getting steals off it and scoring off our fast break. We're holding teams to pretty low points."
Junior guard Sarah McCorkle is Calvary's leading scorer at 16 points per game. Freshman Shelby Koehl has added 11 points, while junior Lizzi Howerton has been a defensive force with five steals per game.
Other returning letter-winners are juniors Dierdre Denault, Alisha Strong, Eliese Donhardt and Becky Olson.
