DECATUR - Normal West High School's basketball team led for a half in its upset bid against Decactur Eisenhower on Friday night before the Panthers rallied in the third quarter to take the lead and went on the defeat Normal West, 60-47, in a Big 12 Conference game.
Decatur Eisenhower won its ninth straight game to improve to 18-4 overall and 10-1 in league play and stay within a half-game of league leader Champaign Central. Normal West dropped to 10-14, 5-7.
The Wildcats got off to a hot start with 22 points in the opening period and led 22-14 after one quarter before the Panthers pulled to within 32-30 at the half.
Eisenhower held Normal West to five points in the third period to take a 45-37 lead heading to the fourth quarter and outscored the Wildcats 15-10 in the final period to pull away
"We played well in the first half but had a breakdown in the third quarter, which has happened too often lately," said Normal West coach Brian Cupples. "In the second half, we turned it over and they were able to take control and win the game."
Junior Cody White scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Wildcats and the 6-foot-6 center grabbed nine rebounds to lead West on the boards. Corey Aken added nine points for West while sophomore Javon Bell finished with seven points and six rebounds.
The Wildcats outscored the Panthers 16-5 from the free-throw line for the game but managed just 15 field goals in the contest to 26 for Decatur.
Louis Jackson scored 22 points to lead Decatur Eisenhower.
