CLINTON - Holy Trinity's Hayden Hoerdemann scored an amazing 42 points but Fieldcrest West got 33 points from Zack Kirkton and 12 from Trent Hartzler to edge out a 63-59 boys basketball victory in the quarterfinals of the Illinois Elementary School Association Class 7A state tournament at Clinton Junior High School.
Previously unbeaten Holy Trinity, which finished at 24-1, jumped out to a 16-7 lead after one quarter before Fieldcrest West (21-2) rallied to take a 28-24 halftime lead. Both teams scored 14 points in the third quarter and 21 in the fourth to give Fieldcrest West the four-point win.
Hoerdemann had five of Holy Trinity's eight 3-point baskets and went 9-for-10 at the free-throw line. Kyle Cox added six points on a pair of 3-pointers and Brad Connor scored five points.
Fieldcrest West, which will play unbeaten Effingham St. Anthony (21-0) at 6 p.m. in today's semifinals, also got six points from Jake Gerdes and five each from Jordan Stalter and Darcy Rippel.
In another game, Mount Pulaski ended its season with a 37-28 loss to La Harpe. The Bruins (16-8) were led by Mitch Holmes' 12 points. Dylan Van Fleet scored 11 points and Colin Beals had 10 for La Harpe (18-5), which will play Peoria Pleasant Valley (22-0) at 7:30 p.m. in today's semis.
