Forty-seven former Illinois State track and field and cross country athletes have been named to the Missouri Valley Conference All-Centennial Team.

Among the honorees were two-time NCAA high jump champion Tom Smith of Heyworth and NCAA indoor mile champion Christian Goy.

Several Redbirds garnered awards in track and cross country including Goy and former all-Americans Chris Bailey, Darryl Frerker and Pete Palumbo.

All-American Stacia Beste, three-time all-American Sue Daggett and two-time all-American Wendy VanMierlo also were honored in cross country and track along with Sara Schumacher and Rosalind Cassidy.

Former men's and women's cross country and track and field head coach John Coughlan was among the 11 coaches named to the all-centennial coaching staff.

Coughlan guided the Redbirds to 25 MVC titles, more than any other conference coach in any sport. He earned 25 MVC Coach of the Year awards.

Coughlan has been named to the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame, as well as the Illinois State Athletics and Drake Relays Halls of Fame.

Also named to the all-centennial men's track team were Mike Matteson, Julius Mwangi, Kevin Clements, Dion Simmons, Dave Rzeszutko, James Duncan, Julius Edwards, Nave Wilson, Tom Barrett and Bruce Ewen.

Bloomington High School graduate Mike Straza was among other ISU cross country honorees along with included Tony Daniel, Bob Dluzen, Dedrick Flowers and David Wilson.

Other Redbirds named to the women's track team were Angie Taylor, Metria Bell, Kathrine Nielson, Angie Kent, Talise Branch and Sam Serrano.

Other cross country honorees were Kim Briggs, Anna Dutton, Brittany Johnson, Laura Kennedy and Heather Murphy.

All-Centennial team composition for each sport has been determined through an on-line fan vote ( and by a centennial committee. Fans also designated all-time coaches as part of the online voting process.
