2001: Finishing with four straight victories-two over national top six teams-was enough to not only earn Illinois Wesleyan an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament, but IWU will play at home against Grinnell. The Titans (19-6) will make their seventh NCAA appearance in the past eight years.
1991: Calvary Baptist Academy tuned up for its defense of the Illinois Association of Christian Schools title by edging Hammond (Ind.) Baptist, 60-56. Gary Miller hit for a game-high 31 points and teammate Brian Jackson added 15 for the Crusaders.
1981: Paced by Greg Yess' 37 points and 16 rebounds, Illinois Wesleyan clinched a tie for second place in the CCIW with a 94-80 victory over a game but outmanned Millikin team. Yess made his first eight shots and Wesleyan, as a team, shot 60 percent from the field before a Seniors Night crowd of 1,800.
1956: Bloomington's Dick Powell turned in his best time ever to place second in the 100-yard backstroke at the Illinois High School state swimming championships. Chuck Lechner of New Trier won the event in 1:00.7 while Powell finished one length behind at 1:01.8.
