5 years ago (2002): Southern Illinois University golfer and University High graduate Josh Wheeler sank a 50-foot putt to go 3-up with seven holes left, then closed out a 5 and 4 victory over Jack Frisch in the scheduled 36-hole finale of the Bloomington-Normal Match Play Tournament at Ironwood Golf Course.

15 years ago (1992): After watching Mike Milligan sink a 25-foot putt on the 18th green, Kevin Schwulst made his 12-footer for a par to force sudden death and then made a 4-foot birdie putt on the 19th hole to oust four-time champion Milligan, 1-up, in the Bloomington-Normal Match Play Tournament at ISU Golf Course.

25 years ago (1982): All those countless hours and long nights working on his stock car finally paid off for Larry Kaufman of Danvers. Kaufman, who began racing eight years ago at the youthful age of 40, took his first checkered flag in the 20-lap feature event last weekend at Fairbury's American Legion Speedway.

50 years ago (1957): Thirty-six of the finest baseball players in this area were selected for the Pantagraph's first All-Star High School baseball game. Gordon Mool of El Paso, an outfielder, pulled the largest number of votes with 786 while Mike Walsh, nifty first sacker for Trinity, topped Intercity athletes with 498.
