5 years ago (2002): Bob Saunders and Zach Hoesly combined for a five-inning no-hitter as the Bloomington Bats beat Clinton 13-0 in the first game of a season-opening American Legion doubleheader. The Bats also won the second game when a 10-run ninth inning produced a 22-12 final score.

15 years ago (1992): Dirk Smid, a University High assistant coach the past two years, was elevated to head football coach of the Pioneers. He replaces Dave Gannaway, who resigned last month to concentrate on his duties as assistant principal/athletic director.

25 years ago (1982): Bloomington's Bobbi Jo Koehn not only assured herself a spot in the Western Closed Tournament later this month, but the freshman-to-be at Bloomington High School won the 14-year division of the Middle Illinois Tennis Association Qualifying Tournament.

50 years ago (1957): Trinity lost its initial start in the state high school baseball tournament but the game little band of Saints need not hold their heads in shame. They bowed to a great Lane Tech nine, 3-1, and made a miraculous fight against the big Chicago team everyone picks to repeat as state champion.
