2001: The best Olympia High School wrestling team in Mike Manahan's 31 years of coaching posted its best finish in school history, placing second in the 18th annual Class A Dual Team State Tournament at Rock Island. The No. 1-ranked Spartans fell to No. 2 Sandwich, 31-24, before a crowd of 2,922.
1991: Expecting a higher seed, Illinois Wesleyan's basketball team was stunned by a seeding of fifth in the five-team NCAA Division III Midwest Regional. The punishment for an 18-8 record against a tough schedule is a trip to Ripon, Wis., to play Midwest Conference champion Ripon (20-4).
1981: Lexington fans squirmed in their seats as they watched a 10-foot jumper by Chenoa bounce off the rim, saving the top-seeded Minutemen's 47-46 victory in the Pontiac Class A Regional. Then Mike Mitchell's clutch shooting in the final 12 seconds lifted Fairbury-Cropsey over University High, 53-52.
1956: Chenoa's Rich Wagner stole the ball from a stalling Minonk-Dana-Rutland team with 15 seconds left and dumped in the basket that gave the Redbirds a 50-48 victory in the Midstate Conference. Denny Bridges scored with three seconds left to lift Octavia over Le Roy, 64-62, in the Sangamon Valley.
