5 years ago (2002): Illinois State track and field and cross country coach Jeff Pigg is leaving to take over the men's and women's cross country programs at his alma mater, the University of Florida. He also will assist both track teams by coaching distance athletes during the indoor and outdoor seasons.
15 years ago (1992): Bloomington's Mike Milligan and partner Chip Travis of Hinsdale did their part by defeating Doug Bauman and Bob Bailey, 2 and 1, but could not prevent the professionals from defeating the amateurs, 8 1/2 to 6 1/2, during the Radix Cup Golf Matches at Oak Park Country Club.
25 years ago (1982): More than 3,000 athletes will converge on Horton Field House for the next three days to compete in the state Special Olympics Summer Games. They will participate in swimming, gymnastics, Frisbee throwing, track and field, and wheelchair events.
50 years ago (1957): Defending champion Meriam Bailey of Evanston and unheralded Doris Phillips of Belleville fired two-over-par 78s to share medalist honors in the 18-hole qualifying round of the 24th annual Women's State Golf Tournament at Bloomington Country Club.
