5 years ago (2002): The Bloomington Bats won two games at Fairview Heights to capture their second consecutive Prairie State Games baseball title. Matt Means, pitching on one day rest, struck out seven in the five innings he was available as the Bats defeated Deerfield, 2-1, in the championship game.

15 years ago (1992): The 85-year-old Missouri Valley Conference will display a new look today as women's athletics officially join the league. Illinois State and two other members of the 10-school MVC previously competed in the Gateway Conference, which will continue as a Division I-AA football league.

25 years ago (1982): The Bloomington Hearts Class AA fast pitch softball team upped its record to 39-16 with a double-header sweep of Miller's Toyota of Salt Lake City. Phil Reimer pitched a two-hitter to win the opener, 1-0, and Graham Arnold held off a late Miller's rally to win the nightcap, 4-3.

50 years ago (1957): Bobby Winkles ranks fifth among the Texas League batsmen this week with a .302 average for his first 66 games. The former Illinois Wesleyan athlete is property of the Chicago White Sox, on option to the Tulsa club.
