5 years ago (2001) After four years of working in the Big Ten Conference and NFL Europe, Doug Rosenbaum of Normal has been welcomed into the promised land of officiating-the National Football League. He will make his preseason NFL debut this week and work his first regular-season game Sept. 9.

15 years ago (1991) Bloomington dentist Mike Milligan saved par with a delicate chip on the last hole, giving him a two-day 139 total and a share of the lead with George Glickley of Chicago in the Illinois State Amateur Golf Championship at Bloomington Country Club. Both shot a 1-under-par 70.

25 years ago (1981) Joe Williams of Arrowsmith conquered the field in the super stocks feature race at Farmer City Raceway. Bob Thoennes of Bloomington took the feature and trophy dash in hobby stocks.

50 years ago (1956) Jerry Detloff singled home manager Don Miles with the winning run in the sixth inning to give State Farm a 1-0 victory over Chanute Air Force Base. The Chiefs went on to sweep the softball doubleheader with an 8-1 conquest in the nightcap as Frank Binkley drove in five runs with a homer and single.
