5 years ago (2001): Kevin Smith sank five 3-pointers en route to 23 points to lead University High over Bloomington, 57-48, in the Intercity Basketball Tournament. Normal Community had 10 players score in a 51-43 decision over Central Catholic.

15 years ago (1991): Illinois Wesleyan’s Brad Mitchell placed 53rd at the NCAA Division III cross country championships in Newport News, Va. Mitchell’s finish was the highest a Titan has placed at the nationals, topping Charlie Leake’s 69th-place finish in 1985.

25 years ago (1981): Illinois State University announced the merger of its men’s and women’s athletic programs July 1. Don Kelley is the current men’s athletic director. Jill Hutchison, interim women’s director and head basketball coach, said she will focus her attention on coaching and not seek any of the new administrative positions.

50 years ago (1956): An accomplished five-sport star in his youth, Pim Goff has teamed with Grady Lewis of the Converse Company to dream up a low-cut basketball shoe which Goff’s Illinois State Normal team will wear in its opener with Quincy College. Only six schools in the nation will have the low-cut shoes for this season.
