2000: Illinois State, a 25-point underdog to No. 2 nationally ranked Kansas, trailed the mighty Jayhawks by only eight points at halftime. Then, Kansas put on the clamps to outscore ISU 11-2 in the first 2 1/2 minutes of the second half and registered an 80-61 victory before a capacity crowd of 16,100.
1990: Rich Gordon had a successful debut as Bloomington's head basketball coach as the defending Big 12 Conference champions raced to a 7-0 lead and were never threatened in a 72-45 season-opening victory over Lincoln. Seniors Jason Sorensen and Terry Riggs led a balanced attack with 15 points each.
1980: One of the most successful high school coaches ever in Indiana, Bob Oltolski, has been named head football coach at Illinois State University. Oltolski comes to ISU from Indiana University where he coached the tackles and tight ends and was offensive coordinator. He succeeds Charlie Cowdrey.
1955: Washington High School was admitted to the Corn Belt Conference by unanimous vote at a loop meeting held at Normal Community High School. Because of its growing enrollment, now a little over 500 pupils, Washington has become too big for the Illio.
