2001: Hoping to build on Gov. George Ryan's 1999 visit to Cuba, officials are planning to send a youth baseball team sponsored by a Bloomington-Normal based McDonald's restaurant to the island nation this summer. Nic Nelson is general manager of the Illinois McDonald's All-Stars.
1991: University High sank a sizzling 62 percent of its shots in the second and third quarters of a 67-60 victory over Central Catholic. Neal Hubbard scored 11 of his game-high 22 points in the U High surge. U High graduate Barry Johnson poured in 30 points to lead Eastern Illinois over Chicago State, 100-97.
1981: Bloomington defeated Central Catholic, 50-45, to win the third annual Intercity Girls Basketball Tournament. The Purple Raiders received banner play from Michele Johnston, Tammi Rettig and Beth Witt to capture their third title under Coach Sue Silvey.
1956: 'Tis rumored that Illinois State Normal University athletic publicity director Russ Steele has worn out six lifetime guaranteed pens recording the scoring feats of Fred Marberry. At DePaul, Blue Demons coach Ray Meyer put two men on Marberry with orders to play him "tough." Marberry scored 27 points.
