5 years ago (2002): Although she pitched a draining 21 innings two days earlier in the Class AA State Tournament, Normal Community's Ali Arnold blanked the Area on six hits and struck out 14 in a 3-0 Intercity victory in the Pantagraph High School All-Star Softball Game. Arnold won the Carrie Jetton MVP Award.

15 years ago (1992): Rick Hood came from the 16th starting position to win the 40-lap All-Star Sprint Car feature race at Fairbury's American Legion Speedway. Hood, from Boonville, Ind., took the lead on lap 37 when leaders Jack Hewitt and Danny Lasoski crashed in turn 4.

25 years ago (1982): Eureka's Larry Holliger pitched a five-hitter for an 8-2 victory that got the summer baseball season off on the wrong foot for Bloomington's Louis E. Davis Post 56 American Legion squad. Darren Martin and Roger Haywood hit two-run homers for Eureka.

50 years ago (1957): Robert Keck of Mount Pulaski, who will complete his master's degree in physical education at the University of Illinois in August, was named to fill Lou Di Orio's shoes at Illinois Wesleyan as assistant football coach and instructor in physical education and health.
